ingredients: Banana slices (½ of banana), Avocado pulp (½ avocado), 1 egg yolk.

Instructions: take slices of banana and some scooped avocado in to a bowl and mash them into a soft pulp. Add one egg yolk and whisk it into a soft and creamy paste. Before use, clean your face and apply this banana and avocado facemask all over your neck and face area. Leave it for about 10 minutes and rinse it of with warm water.

Avocado And Honey Mask

ingredients: 1 tsp yogurt, 1 tsp honey, 1 avocado.

Instructions: Split the avocado into 2 parts and then scoop out the thick pulp from half of the fruit use fork or blender to mash the avocado into a creamy paste. Add yogurt and honey to the avocado paste and mix well. Cleanse your face first before use and dry with a clean towel. Apply the avocado and honey mask over your neck and face and let it sit for about 15 minutes.

Avocado And Egg White Mask

Ingredients: Lemon Juice (of ½ lemon), 1 Egg White, Avocado Pulp (of ½ avocado)

Instructions: Slit the avocado and scoop out the pulp into a bowl. add the lemon juice and egg white to the avocado bowl, and whisk it. Cleanse your face with a cleansing milk or mild face wash and gently apply the mixture paste onto your neck and face, and do a gently message. Wear the mask until dry or at least 20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water.

Avocado Mask

Ingredients: 1 oz of Orange Juice, 2 oz of Ripe Avocado, 1 tsp of Molasses Chamomile Essential Oil Drops, 1 tsp of Pure Acacia Honey

Instructions: Put all the ingredients together in a food blender and blend it on high until soft and squishy. If you want you can add more orange juice to lighten the consistency.

apply the paste evenly on your neck and face area using a makeup sponge or an applicator brush. Now gently massage the paste on your skin using your fingers. Leave the mask for at least half an hour. Rinse off the mask from your face Using tepid water.

Benjamin Franklin once said that “an ounce of Power of Prevention is worth a pound of cure,” yet just a few hundred years later the majority of Americans are not finding consistent, long-term success in lifestyle habits that promote the prevention of disease.

This can be a bit confusing at first glance since we have more Power of Prevention screenings, exams, and tools than ever before.  So why the discrepancy?  Why do we have more preventative screenings than any time in history and yet our nation as a whole is in the midst of a massive health crisis?

The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) reveals, based on several studies, that screening tests often do not lead to earlier diagnosis of disease and often result in overdiagnosis, as well as over treatment, which can have detrimental consequences on both our physical and mental health.

While health care costs in the United States are more than double the average spent by other industrialized nations and account for 18 percent of the U.S. GDP, America ranks 24th out of 30 among these countries on life expectancy.

While we can appreciate the availability of Power of Prevention healthcare screenings, these tests do not reveal the overall health of an individual nor do they prompt lifestyle change until an issue is already at hand.

Keep in mind that what we commonly consider “preventative tests” are actually diagnostic tests, meaning they reveal an already developed issue (a diagnosis) but are not actually preventing that issue from occurring. So what does it take to prevent chronic diseases that are prevalent and now considered commonplace in our country?

True Power of Prevention begins long before a disease is able to be diagnosed. 

According to Dr. David Katz, it is estimated that healthy lifestyle changes have the potential to decrease the chronic disease burden in the U.S. by as much as 80 percent. 

These are diseases such as Type 2 diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, hypertension, cancer, and a myriad of digestive disorders —those which were previously considered the “diseases of kings” because of their common occurrence among the wealthiest in society.  

These were the individuals who were wealthy enough to frequently consume rich foods in the forms of fatty animal products and sugary desserts. Commoners, on the other hand, who were physically active and consumed more plant foods in their agricultural society, did not experience these diseases at anywhere near the same rate.

How do we reverse current diseases and prevent future occurrences?
  1. For starters, consider your most frequent health complaint and ask yourself: “Why do I have ____ in the first place?” Of course, not everything is directly linked to diet, but most ailments are linked to and can be dramatically improved through our diets. For instance, if you have acid reflux (simply a digestive disease in which stomach acid or bile irritates the food pipe lining) wouldn’t it be easier, and more enjoyable long-term, if you targeted what was leading to such an acidic environment within your digestive system rather than suppressing it with antacids?
  2. Say good-bye to processed foods – They are essentially void of the nutrients your body desperately needs to prevent and reverse disease and instead flood your body with ingredients that damage cells.
  3. Move towards more whole foods and focus on eating a plant-based diet.  If you’re uncertain of where to begin, consider allowing me to aid you in beginning to pursue a healthier diet one step at a time.  I meet with clients in the Raleigh area or via FaceTime and phone consults for those out of the area.  You could also read a book based on sound, evidence-based research, such as The End of Dieting by Joel Fuhrman, M.D., and select two simple changes to implement each week.

Regardless of where you find yourself today, remember, the body has beautiful self-healing abilities.  Where you are today doesn’t need to be where you are in the future.

On to one of my favorite topics – digestion.  Seriously!  My college roommate would be quite proud of me for embracing some bathroom talk (I was always the shy one.;)) but no need to worry, I’ll be taking a more clinical approach here.  Let’s start off with a little pop quiz.

Digestion begins in the:

  • A.) Small intestines
  • B.) Mouth
  • C.) Iliogranum
  • D.) Stomach

If you said iliogranum….you’re wrong. I just made that word up.;)

Digestion actually begins in the mouth, where the enzymes in our saliva begin to break down food.  Gravity and muscular contractions begin to propel food down our esophagus into our stomach where it is met with hydrochloric acid and digestive enzymes to begin the process of breaking everything down.  The partially broken down food then moves along to the small intestines where nutrients begin to be extracted in order to be used throughout our body.

These nutrients are transported through the bloodstream to the liver for detoxification.  The liver has other responsibilities as well, such as the production of hormones, proteins, and bile.  Additionally, the pancreas has several responsibilities, but today we’ll note its role in providing enzymes that are crucial to the digestive process. 

Next, wavelike contractions called peristalsis, that I’ve mentioned before, move everything to your colon.  This is where water is absorbed from the stool into the bloodstream and everything is transported to the….well, finish line.

Whoa!  Can you believe all of that (and actually so much more!) takes place within the 35 feet of the winding digestive system within you?!  It’s truly amazing what our bodies do without us even giving a thought to it.

Foot Super Highway – All health begins in the gut.

 The nearly 37 trillion cells in our bodies are truly the “building blocks” for all of the body’s functions.  These building blocks need nutrients to do their jobs well and these nutrients come from the foods we eat, which as you now know, are absorbed through a well functioning digestive system.

So where do we start?

The nutrients we’re talking about are nutrients found in whole plant foods – vegetables, fruits, beans & legumes, whole grains, and nuts & seeds.  These are the foods that will not only fuel your body at the cellular level but also aid in healing your digestive tract and eventually promote greater overall gut health.  You can find a comprehensive list here for download.

Move toward more of the whole foods I mentioned.  Swap your more processed granola bar for an apple or banana with almond or peanut butter.

Add beans to your main dishes (also great for lowering cholesterol and weight management!)

Chew your food – take the time to eat rather than inhaling your meals.  When food is chewed well it is able to be broken down better, digested more efficiently (think less gas & bloating), and absorbed more easily.
