Gogglebox star Mary Cook has passed away at the age of 92, it has been confirmed. Cook featured on the Channel 4 programme alongside fellow Bristolian Marina Wingrove after joining the series in 2016.

Channel 4 and Studio Lambert – which makes the show – confirmed her death in a statement issued today (Monday 23 August), issued on behalf of Cook’s family.
It said: “We are extremely saddened to share that Gogglebox star Mary Cook passed away in hospital this weekend at the age of 92 with her family by her side.
Mary passed away in hospital over the last weekend surrounded by her family, her heartbroken loved ones have confirmed in a statement.

The former hospitality worker joined the hugely popular Channel 4 programme in 2016 alongside fellow Bristolian Marina Wingrove.
The sad news of her death was confirmed in a statement issued on Monday by Channel 4 and Studio Lambert, which makes the programme, on behalf of Mary’s family.

The statement said: “We are extremely saddened to share that Gogglebox star Mary Cook passed away in hospital this weekend at the age of 92 with her family by her side.
“Beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and dear friend to many, Mary, who worked in the hospitality trade, had been married and widowed twice.”
The pair “became instant fan favourites due to their brilliantly witty and often cheeky moments”, the statement added.
“Mary will be sorely missed by the entire Gogglebox family, cast and crew.
Cook and Wingrove were absent from Gogglebox during the pandemic but returned in May’s series finale.
According to the St Monica Trust retirement home, where both Cook and Wingrove lived, they were discovered by a researcher for the show during a trip to Asda.
As quoted on the trust’s website, Cook said: “I was going shopping, so I asked them if they could wait until we got back.

“They came up to Marina’s flat, held cards up of different famous people and we had to talk about them.”
Wingrove added: “I went across to catch the bus down to Asda and this young girl comes up to me and says ‘Do you ever watch Gogglebox?’
“I said, ‘Well I have done and she said ‘Do you want to be on it?‘
“I thought, ‘I’m game for a laugh, like’ then she said ‘Have you got a friend?’
“And like that, Mary came round the corner on her scooter.”



Speaking about how much they’ve enjoyed being on the show together, Cook said: “We’re just talking to each other and having a laugh, aren’t we? We do say some cheeky things, but they don’t always put them on the show.”
Wingrove also said it had really perked up their lives, saying: “It’s lots of peoples’ favourite programme and they’re really pleased for us being on the show.
“It’s brightened up two old dears’ lives, hasn’t it?”
